Claude “Sonny” Elmer Trusty

Claude “Sonny” Elmer Trusty, 74, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully at his home on March 12, 2026, surrounded by the family who loved him dearly.

Born in Leavenworth, Kansas and raised in Topeka, Sonny was given his lifelong nickname by his grandmother, Lessie. He grew up in the community he would later serve, attending local schools, working from a young age, and eventually building a family of his own. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kay Louise (Anderson) Trusty, and their three children: Michael (Jennifer) Ray, Michell (Richard) Spence, and Sunny (Matt) Martin. Sonny was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren and several great‑grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, many siblings and beloved chihuahua, Duke.

Sonny had a gift for bringing joy into everyday life. He loved talking and dreaming about cars, cooking for anyone who needed a meal, and caring for his own yard as well as the yards of neighbors and friends. He found happiness tinkering in his sheds, fixing things around the house, playing the slot machines, and calling loved ones simply to check in.

Professionally, Sonny worked for the City of Topeka in both the Parks Department and the Street Department until his early retirement in 2008 following an accident. He was known for his humor, his optimism, and his ability to make others laugh. Kind‑hearted and well‑liked, Sonny was a steady and dependable presence for many in his family. Later in life, he became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints, a step that brought him peace and purpose.

A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held in July 2026. Details will be shared with family and friends in the coming months.
