Kathryn “Kathy” (Glenn) Garland

Kathryn “Kathy” (Glenn) Garland passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, at Midland Hospice House. Kathy was born on May 27, 1941, in Topeka, Kansas, to Norman and Virgie (Haggins) Glenn.

A lifelong resident of Topeka, she attended Topeka Public Schools and later continued her education at colleges in Kansas and Missouri. With credentials in Medical Records and Quality Assurance, Kathy built a long and rewarding career in the medical field. She eventually served in a senior position at the VA Hospital, retiring after 22 years of dedicated service. On October 6, 1972, Kathy married Burnett Garland Sr. Together they shared 41 years of marriage. Following her retirement, Kathy continued working alongside Burnett, helping manage his janitorial business.

Kathy was a kind, generous, strong-willed woman whose faith was an important part of who she was. She was a member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church where she was active in Sunday School, Deborah Circle, Women’s Auxiliary, and the Senior Ministry. She also participated in an online Bible Study Fellowship. Although the group met virtually through Zoom, Kathy formed meaningful friendships that she truly cherished. Kathy had a heart for volunteering and loved connecting with people. Anyone who knew her knew that she enjoyed a good conversation, and finding a good bargain was another favorite pastime.

Above all, Kathy treasured her family. Being a grandmother brought an especially meaningful joy to her life, and she deeply cherished the relationship she shared with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her sharp mind and remarkable memory made her the family historian, often recalling stories and events from decades past with incredible detail.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Virgie Glenn; her husband, Burnett Garland Sr.; her daughter, Pamela Shears; her son, Aldo Scott Wright; and her sister, Norma Galloway.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Michelle Glenn; her son, Stacey Wright; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were touched by her love and kindness.

Kathy will be remembered for her giving spirit, her strength, her faith, and the unwavering love she shared with her family and friends. Her memory will continue to live on through the many lives she touched and the family she loved so dearly.

A memorial service will be held on October 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM at New Mount Zion Baptist Church, 2801 SE Indiana Avenue, Topeka, KS 66605.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Midland Hospice House in appreciation of the compassionate care Kathy received during her final days.
