ROBERT J MANNING, aged 87, passed away on November 3, 2024, in Meriden, Kansas, born on June 6,1937, affectionately known as Bob, led a life marked by dedication to family, education, and community.
Bob graduated front Avard High School and went on to receive a higher education degree from Northwestern, served in the National Guard, where he embraced the discipline and camaraderie that would later influence his teaching careers. Bob dedicated over three decades to coaching gymnastics, first spending two years at Atchinson followed by 32 impactful years at Lawrence High School. Under his guidance, Lawrence High gymnastics achieved remarkable success, securing 21 national championships and an unprecedented streak of 116 consecutive victories. Beyond his professional endeavors, Bob was a passionate individual with diverse interests. He was a skilled horseman, an avid dancer, and had a profound appreciation for cowboy history. His love for teaching extended beyond. He was also a foster parent and an enthusiastic participant in community activities, often hosting campfire cookouts open to all. Bob’s personal life was enriched by his loving families.
He is survived by his former wife Arlene Manning with sons Micheal A.(SharIa) and Jay A. He later remarried and is survived by Wife Mildred Pamela Manning; stepchildren, Beyanna Conrad (Michael) Byron D Coates jr (Joyce), Koty A. Coates (Heather Smith), Victoria E Moody (Cameron). Later adopting Brittany M. and Lane N. Manning; 2 grandchildren, 9 step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Georgia E. Manning, and his brother, Norman Manning.
A Celebration of life and love for Robert J. Manning will be announced at a later date, possibly in the spring. If you like, contributions may be made to the Cancer Association or the Dementia Association, honoring Bob's Compass for his enduring impact on those around him.
