January 31, 1937 - November 04, 2020
Ronald “Ron” Eugene Morgan, Sr was born January 31, 1937 and passed on November 4, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents were Charles “Charlie” Morgan and Mary Bessie Morgan (Provolt) and two brothers: Charles “Chuck” Morgan and Frank Morgan. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Philime “Phil” Morgan. Ron married Nathaleen Vorhies in April, 1962 and had three children, Ronald E. Morgan, Jr; Michelle Morgan (Rouse); and Rebecca “Becky” Morgan (Hanika). Ron married Philime “Phil” Carathers on May 24, 1972 taking her two children, Deborah “Deb” Good (Carathers) and Marc Carathers, as his own to raise. Ron and Phil built a home on Carlson Road in 1974 and both remained on the home property until their passings. He is survived by all five children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ron quit school at an early age to join his dad in the bricklaying trade. But, at the age of 18, Ron joined the U.S. Navy. He served four years in the Navy and crossed the equator on February 13, 1958. Ron enjoyed his service time and fondly told stories of his service and crossing the equator, something not all service members were able to do back in the late 1950’s. After leaving the service, he spent some time in California working with his brother but soon felt the pangs of homesickness. Ron returned to Topeka and the trade he loved, bricklaying. Ron served as an apprentice and passed his certification on June 20 th , 1961. Bricklaying was not just a job for Ron but a passion as well. He took great pride in his work and in the craftsmanship, he brought to the jobs, whether commercial work or residential homes. He worked jobs from Kansas City to Emporia. He worked for several contractors but was working for Scott Masonry when he retired. Ron was a proud member of Local 15 Bricklayers & Allied Craftsman union. He retired from the trade in 2003 but continued to be active in meetings. He passed with over 60 years of active membership.
As previously mentioned, Ron is survived by five children and a number grandchildren and great grandchildren: Ron’s son Ronald E Morgan, Jr. and grandchildren Ronald (and Shelby) Morgan, III; Jeffery Peterson; Sonny (and Jessica) Peterson; Melvin Bingham; and Shira Morgan.
