Derrick Paul “Buck” Anderson

Derrick Paul “Buck” Anderson

June 24, 1959 - March 14, 2023

Derrick Paul “Buck” Anderson, 63, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2023 following a 3 month illness. He was born June 24, 1959 into the loving family of Leland “Andy” and Enid Anderson. He married the love of his life, Juanita Clark, in September of 2005. Buck was a 1977 graduate of Topeka High School. He was employed by the Kansas Turnpike Authority until 2017 at which he enjoyed greeting travelers, encouraged them to be safe, and handed treats out to their pets.

Buck was an outgoing, good hearted and compassionate person who loved people. He delighted in having fun with his many nieces and nephews as well as the family pets. Buck was unique in that he never forgot an address or phone number and could do math in his head like a calculator. He was a passionate and loyal sports fan of Washburn University, UCLA, the Denver Broncos and the Boston Celtics. Buck personally knew each member of the Washburn University girls basketball and volleyball teams. He would offer encouragement to them and help out whenever the opportunity presented. Buck was an excellent bowler. He scored 300 in multiple games and achieved many awards. He cherished his time on the golf course with his brother and high school friends. After retirement and up to his illness he played golf almost daily with a great group that became close-knit friends. He will be dearly missed by family and many that loved him.

Buck is survived by his wife of 17 years, Juanita (Clark) Anderson, siblings Susan (Mit) Winter, Patrick (Sharon) Anderson, Kristen (Bob) White, Sharon Jones, all of Topeka, sister-in-law Terri Clark of Washington Kansas,14 nieces and nephews, 26 great nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Hondo. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Jerry Jones and Jim Clark, nephew Dustin Jones and his dog, Abby.

A Celebration of Buck’s Life will be held on Saturday April 22, 2023 at 10:00 am at Trinity Presbyterian Church at 4746 SW 21st Street, Topeka, KS 66604. •  Juanita, I am sending you, Buck's family & friends my heartfelt condolences with Buck's passing from this journey to the next.   Please know that you're in my thoughts during this difficult time, my friend.  I know there aren't enough words to comfort you right now, but I am sending you a warm hug and prayers of peace.  May the good memories be your strength.  Love you, Lynne.

  • Juanita:

You are in my thoughts and prayers.  Buck was a passionate man towards things he was involved with. Washburn will not be same without him. Heaven’s volleyball team will be lucky to have him.

  • To all of Bucks family you have our condolences. He has been a part of our lives since he and Jeff were childhood friends. Swimming lessons at our pool. Leading cheers at Washburn volleyball and basketball games. His enthusiasm will be missed. Juanita you have our deepest sympathy.

  •    I am so very sad to hear of Buck’s passing. I have good memories of playing hotly competitive wiffle ball and kick the can games with Buck and the other neighbor kids as we grew up. I’m sorry that I didn’t have the opportunity to know Buck during adulthood. Reading his obituary, I can see what a wonderful man he was. May all of his family heal from this great loss. May you find comfort and peace.

  • Dear Juanita, I was saddened to hear about the death of Derrick. He was closest to my brothers John and Tom.I was in and out of the Anderson home as a child and less frequently as an adult,Kristen, Sharon and Derrick spent some summer days at our pool.Derrick was such fun.He was strong and athletic and the boys wrestled endlessly.Iwas friends with him on Facebook and he liked to stir the pot regarding his favorite sports teams but we always settled these issues laughing.I am sorry for your loss. Buck will be missed.❤️

  • Sorry to hear about my old buddy Derrick. He was 2 years ahead of me at Topeka High and we both were Celtics fans. Remember playing basketball with him at Crestview. Also I remember holding up the line at the toll booth when I was a truck driver so we could talk. Thanks for being such a good friend and mentor Derrick.  Love you man.???

  • Juanita, so sorry to hear about Derrick. I had the pleasure of not only bowling with him for several years but all the sports conversations we had (even if he always thought he was right). Always looked forward to bowling with him and the rest of the guys on Thursday nights and had some wonderful times together. I will miss our conversations that we had. He was one of my best friends. He will be dearly missed.

  • I'm grateful for the memories I have of Mr. Buck being at our Washburn games with his famous quote of "I'm here to get you guys going..."

My teammates and I are grateful for your faithful attendance!

  • I was so saddened to learn of Buck’s passing.  He truly made going to a Washburn Volleyball game an experience.  Having him there to encourage my daughter and all her teammates was a gift and he will be dearly missed by all.  Keeping your family in prayer.
