Garold Laverne Spena, 80, of Topeka, passed away peacefully at Oakley Place in Topeka, KS on June 19, 2026.
He was born June 18, 1946 in Goodland, KS to LaVerne and Esta (Kysar) Spena.
Garold was an accomplished high school athlete in Perry, GA and pursued both college basketball and baseball opportunities after high school. He served in the Air Force where he became proficient in organizational technology and computers. He was honorably discharged in 1970.
Garold began working nights at Security Benefit Group in Topeka and eventually rose to Assistant Vice President of Information Technology. He enjoyed his time at Security Benefit and many co-workers became lifelong friends. Garold retired from Security Benefit and stayed active in its retiree lunches and outreach.
Garold enjoyed a long retirement with many hobbies. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed maintaining his pool and mulched beds for everyone to enjoy. He became a skilled woodworker in his retirement, crafting a variety of oak furniture pieces. He built his poker table where he hosted card games often. He enjoyed going to woodworking trade shows in Kansas City and eating at his favorite restaurant - Jumpin’ Catfish. He never missed a Chiefs or Royals game. He made great homemade ice cream and apple pies.
Garold was a devoted and generous father. He was supportive and encouraging in his kids’ life adventures. He went to Europe to visit his daughter while she studied abroad and made many trips to North Dakota to visit his son and family. He loved to drive and made many cross country trips during retirement.
Garold married Janet Spena on June 17, 1983. She survives, along with his children Alex Spena (Kelsey) of Fargo, ND and Paige Ringer (Ryan) of LIttleton, CO; grandchildren Remy, Jack and Evie Spena; sister Loene Hamlin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings Darryl Spena, Elton Spena and Mary Beth Cunningham.
Garold was a longtime member of Gage Park Baptist Church where he sang in the choir.
Garold chose to be cremated. The family will have a celebration of Garold’s life with close friends and family. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
