Harold passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening, March 20, 2025, at the age of 97.

He was born the son of George Turntine and Henrietta Turntine (Mayor) on October 9, 1927, in Pitcher, Oklahoma.

Harold married Itha “Jean” Meech on April 4, 1949, and to this union, they had four children.

Survivors include his loving family that includes his children Jan Ash (Ronnie), Jeanette Cummings (Jim), Debi Starr, and his daughter-in-law, Tamara Turntine. Harold has seven grandchildren; Jason Cummings, Misty Cummings-Smith, Chad Ash, Kasey Starr-Jensen, Kristine Starr-Torrez, Jourdan Turntine-Holmes and Samuel Turntine. He was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; a son, Harold “Bud” Walter Turntine, a brother Luther Turntine, three sisters, Viola Mundell, Dorothy Milward and Louise Lincoln and two grandchildren Andrew Starr and Wendy Ash.

Harold served his country in the U.S. Navy post WWII in the Pacific on the USS Blenny Submarine.

Harold graduated from Parker High School, Parker, Kansas. He had an impeccable work ethic and started his career working for the Katy Railroad mostly in and around Linn County, Kansas until 1958 when he and his family moved to Topeka, Kansas, as he began employment and retired from the State of Kansas, where he held the title of Director of Motor Vehicles.

His family was the centerpiece of his life. He enjoyed nothing more than being around his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed outdoor activities and loved to fish, hunt and play golf. He was always up for traveling and trying new things. He was a lifelong learner and had a quick and inquisitive mind as well as being a good conversationalist and historian. He and Jean wintered at their Florida home since 1992 and that was the highlight of his year to be able to soak up the sun and warm weather.

Celebration of Life will be announced by his family at a later date.

  • I am so very sorry to hear of this passing. My condolences to all, my heart hurts for you. Harold was a genuine beautiful soul I respected him and enjoyed my time around him immensely. I know he will be missed.
