May 15, 1958 – July 3, 2026
With broken hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Mary Elizabeth Dennis, who left this world on July 3, 2026, at the age of 68.
Mary was born on May 15, 1958, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, to Theodore Emmal Dennis and Ethel Myrtel Griffin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Phil and John; her sister, Cathy; and her beloved son, Phillip Smith.
She is survived by her loving son, Michael Cain; her siblings, Theresa and Mike; and her cherished grandchildren, Phillip, Michael, Nicole, Danny, James, Mikaela, and Tim, who were truly the center of her world.
Mary graduated from Highland Park High School and worked for many years in the supply office at Bell Telephone.
To know Mary was to love her. She had a heart of gold, a quick wit, and never hesitated to tell it like it was. She had a playful sense of humor and was a legendary trash talker—funny, fearless, and always able to make everyone around her laugh. She was the person you could call at any hour, knowing she would be there without hesitation. Loyal, genuine, and fiercely protective of those she loved, Mary was the kind of person who made everyone feel like family.
She loved music and believed it was meant to be turned up loud and enjoyed. She was always ready for an adventure, always down for a good time, and made every gathering brighter simply by being there.
Above everything else, Mary was a devoted grandmother. Her grandchildren were the greatest joy of her life. Whether she was making crafts, creating memories, or simply spending time with them, those moments meant everything to her. Her bond with her granddaughter, Mikaela, was especially special, and the love they shared was undeniable. Being "Grandma" was her favorite title and her proudest accomplishment.
For those who knew Mary best, the song Only God Knows Why will forever hold a special place in their hearts. It carried her family through one unimaginable loss, and today its words remind us once again how precious and fragile life truly is and how important it is to cherish every moment with the people we love.
The world got a little quieter the day you left us, but we have no doubt Heaven got a whole lot louder. While our hearts are broken, we find peace in believing you've been reunited with your beloved son, Phillip.
Ride free, Mary. Until we meet again.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced by the family.
