Gail June Spencer

Gail June Spencer, 70, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on July 7, 2026.

Gail was born on March 22, 1956, in Topeka, Kansas, to Vernon and Iona Spencer. Gail was raised in Big Springs, Kansas, and graduated from Shawnee Heights High School Class of 1974.

In 1976, following high school, Gail began her career with Hallmark Cards and remained a dedicated employee for 37 until her retirement in 2013.

Outside of work, Gail's greatest passion was drag racing. She particularly loved racing her 1966 Chevy Nova. Her love for racing began in 1979 at Lawrence Dragway and Little Apple Raceway in Manhattan, Kansas. She continued competing locally, into her late 60's, until just three years ago, when Heartland Motorsports Park closed their doors. Gails excitement for racing and love of cars led her to travel the United States, fueling a passion that remained with her throughout the entirety of her life.

Gail had an incredible ability to build, fix, and create. She spent much of her free time sewing kennel covers and hand-braiding rugs to donate to the Topeka Cat Association and The Humane Society to provide comfort to animals in need. She was also a talented gardener and spent many summer days teaching her grandchildren how to grow vegetables, especially radishes, or swimming with them in her backyard pool.

Gail is survived by her sons, Michael Lockhart Jr. and Lee Lockhart, and his wife, Taryn Lockhart; her brother, Roger Spencer, and his wife, Joyce Spencer; her brother, Rod Spencer; her grandchildren, Patience, Serenity Mirto and her husband, Justin Mirto, McKenzie, Anthony, Faith, Lowen, and Losi Lockhart; her great-granddaughter, Azalea Terrell-Lockhart; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, friends, and racing buddies.

A memorial service celebrating Gail's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the Heartland Motorsports Park Tech Building, 7530 S. Topeka Blvd., Topeka, Kansas 66619.
