Randall (Randy) K. Kemper

Randall (Randy) K. Kemper

NOVEMBER 18, 1946 - JANUARY 20, 2025

Randy Kemper, a beloved husband, stepfather, grandfather, and friend, born on November 18, 1946 passed away on January 20, 2025. He was surrounded by love and left a lasting mark on all who knew him.

Randy is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Kellie Kemper, his mother-in-law (aka mother-in-love) Vaughn McCoy, and his three stepchildren, Brian Thompson (Overland Park, KS), Natascha Rolfes (Wildwood, MO), and Kyle Thompson (San Diego, CA). He embraced the role of "Grampa" with pride and joy and is loved by his five grandchildren: Blake, Jude, Ava, Libi, and Elijah. Randy’s family and extended network of friends will forever remember his warmth, humor, and wisdom.

A natural-born salesman, Randy’s professional career was marked by his ability to connect with others and inspire confidence. However, his true life’s passion was devoted to Alcoholics Anonymous and helping men and women recover from the devastating disease of alcoholism. Randy became sober on February 23, 1977, and was one month shy of celebrating 48 years of sobriety. Randy’s journey of recovery, rooted in experiences that shaped him since childhood, made him a compassionate guide and a beacon of hope for countless individuals.

In the early 1990s, Randy co-founded the Sims-Kemper Treatment Center, developing the first intensive outpatient treatment program in the country. His work in the recovery community was not just a career but a calling, driven by a deep belief that a meaningful life is not about wealth, popularity, or perfection. To Randy, life was about being real, being humble, and sharing himself to touch the lives of others.

Randy was preceded in death by his loving grandma, Mary Jane Anderson, who departed on February 23, 1972, five years to the day prior to Randy’s “moment of clarity” and beginning of sobriety. Her memory and influence were a source of strength and inspiration throughout his life. We are comforted to think that he is with her now.

A memorial service to celebrate Randy’s life will be held on March 18, 2025, 3:00 pm at Crestview United Methodist Church 2245 SW Eveningside Dr. Topeka, KS.

His family invites all whose lives he impacted to come together at that time to honor his memory. Mark your calendars if you want to attend. I will send reminder out about 2 weeks in advance.

Randy’s legacy will live on in the lives he uplifted, the laughter he shared, and the love he poured into every relationship. He will be profoundly missed and never forgotten.

  • My sincere sympathy to the Family and other fortunate friends of Randy. We met and became instant friends in  Sept. of 1961 in Mr. Ginavan's homeroom at Topeka High. After our graduation in 1964, our paths would cross or we'd visit at reunions. We shared many laughs and memories, over the years. Randy said we were distant cousins, at one point !! After that, we called each other "Cuz". I'm so sad to hear of his passing and will miss Randy til we meet, again. May God keep his Family wrapped in his loving arms, forever.
